The Department of Pharmacology at Merck Research Laboratories is seeking a flexible and motivated Senior Scientist to join a group of researchers dedicated to the discovery of novel drugs. The primary responsibilities of the group are to design, develop, and execute in vitro assays to evaluate and characterize drug candidates working collaboratively with teams across a wide range of antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, vaccine, and/or neuroscience programs.

The successful candidate will possess a strong understanding of enzymology and biochemistry in order to develop and execute novel in vitro assays to both monitor inhibition/activation as well as to study kinetics and mechanism of action. The candidate will also have experience in the development and execution of cellular assays and be capable of validating and integrating new technologies or methodologies as needed to address questions related to drug discovery programs and projects. Optimization of efficiency and productivity through effective management of work flow and timely verbal and/or written communication to Therapeutic Area program teams is required.

Required:

  • A Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, or a related discipline with a minimum of 7 years of relevant experience, OR a Master's Degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, or a related discipline with a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience, OR a PhD in Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, or related discipline.

  • Experience in the design, development, and/or execution of biochemical and enzymatic assays utilizing a wide array of detection methodologies (e.g. fluorescence, absorbance, radiometric, LC-MS, etc).

  • Experience in the design, development, and/or execution of cell-based assays. Highly skilled in troubleshooting experimental design, assay development, and data analysis.

Preferred:

  • Experience in mechanistic enzymology and/or kinetics.

  • Experience in laboratory automation platforms.

  • Experience in antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal or neuroscience drug discovery.

  • Strong collaborative and communication skills
