As part of the Merck Manufacturing Division, and operating within Global Vaccines and Biologics Commercialization (GVBC), the Biologics Process Development and Commercialization (BPDC) department provides manufacturing sciences expertise, through technical process leadership and laboratory capabilities, in the commercialization and post-launch support of Merck’s biologics pipeline. Working closely with colleagues across the biologics network, including Merck Research Labs (MRL), Operations, and Global Technical Operations (GTO), our department supports upstream cell culture, downstream purification, analytical testing and characterization, and technology transfer of biological processes (therapeutic proteins) from Phase III through commercial launch and transfer to the commercial supply network.

Under the general scientific and administrative direction of the Director of BPDC Process Analytics, and working in conjunction with internal and external partners, this individual will support in-line commercial biologics, including, but not limited to, KEYTRUDA and ZINPLAVA, providing deep scientific support for investigations, post-launch process enhancements, technology transfers, and the development and characterization of next generation processes post-approval. For pipeline biologics, the individual will support various commercialization activities, including scale-up/scale-down, process characterization and validation, technology transfer and authoring of regulatory submissions.

Technical Scope:

  • Providing technical leadership for mass spectrometry method development and qualification, as well as the execution of (internal) or management of (external) laboratory activities.

  • Collaborating with development and commercial manufacturing teams to support process/product characterization and investigations.

  • Executing mass spectrometry methods and analyzing data.

  • Authoring associated technical documents and presenting scientific content in internal and external forums.

  • Providing mentorship and technical direction to other members of the team which may include dotted-line reporting relationships.

Education Minimum Requirement:

  • Masters in Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biophysics, or related field with a minimum of 6 years working directly with mass spectrometry

  • PhD in Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biophysics, or related field with direct mass spectrometry experience

Required Experience and Skills:

  • Subject matter expertise in mass spectrometry, with minimum three (3) years of experience with LC-MS and/or LC-MS/MS for shotgun and targeted proteomics for large molecule characterization, host cell protein identification, and peptide mapping

  • Subject matter expertise in analytical separations including HPLC, UPLC

  • Experience developing and/or qualifying mass spectrometry methods

  • Experience in maintaining and operating multiple mass spectrometry instruments (e.g. triple quadrupole, orbitrap, ESI-TOF)

  • Experience using multiple mass spectrometry software packages (e.g. Chromeleon, Xcalibur, MassLynx, Skyline, Expressionist) for instrument control and analysis of data

Preferred Experience and Skills:

  • Knowledgeable in biologics drug substance end-to-end process development

  • Experience providing scientific mentorship and guidance to technical coworkers and colleagues

  • Experience with laboratory start-up and management

  • Strong cross-functional background, enabling teams to reach peak performance

  • Ability to thrive in an ambiguous environment and collaborate across functions

  • Ability to foster a collaborative work environment focused on mentorship, coaching, and technical development

  • Experience authoring technical documentation to support regulatory submissions

  • Experience with project strategic planning
