Building on our longstanding experience with Value Based Contracting in the US, in 2016 Merck established a US Pricing and Value Based Contracting (VBC) team to coordinate and integrate efforts relating to innovative pricing and contracting opportunities to help meet our access and affordability objectives in the evolving US healthcare system. This position is responsible for monitoring, developing and delivering pricing and VBC strategies across our portfolio to a range of customer types, including payers, healthcare providers and channel intermediaries in the US healthcare system.

Working alongside US marketing, payer marketing, market access/Integrated Account Management and policy teams, and global counterparts, this position will be responsible for:

  • Monitoring and interpreting external policy and competitive developments and communicating these across the organization in a timely way

  • Leading on the design and implementation of innovative pricing and VBC approaches around customer and product opportunities, consistent with the strategy and objectives of marketing and customer-facing teams

  • Engaging with interested customers alongside customer-facing teams to support the assessment and development of opportunities – and where appropriate, moving forward with co-creating VBC opportunities with customers

  • Ensuring that initiatives are consistent with overall Merck pricing policies and principles, including compliance, legal and data considerations relating to the complex regulatory and operational environment surrounding innovative pricing and VBC in the US

  • Assisting in the creation and coordination of required strategy and capabilities for innovative pricing and VBCs in the US organization.

Education Minimum Requirement:

  • Bachelor’s degree.

Required Experience and Skills**:

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in one or more of the following areas: Marketing, Market Access, Health Economics/Finance, Contract Management, Pricing, Policy, Analytics, Strategy or related functions

Preferred Experience and Skills:

  • Experience with pricing, contracting, reimbursement or market access in US, e.g. knowledge of rules and regulations, contract management and execution, contract performance evaluation

  • Well-versed in underlying trends in healthcare reimbursement, payment, and coverage in the US.

  • Understanding of the drivers, strategy and business models of key US customers (payer, channel, provider), especially the financial considerations, reimbursement dollar flow and/or data environment relating to medicines

  • Ability to understand and navigate a complex regulatory and compliance framework during the design and delivery of pricing and value based contracting opportunities

  • High energy, with strong project management skills and ability to drive results across cross-functional teams in a timely and compliant way

  • Demonstrated capability to think strategically

  • Strong analytic background

  • Experience leading diverse teams in a solid line and/or matrixed environment

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Works well with broad ranges of management and functions
