Global Research IT is a global, multidisciplinary team of IT professionals, informaticists and information scientists who work at the intersection of technology, science and data to provide the research IT ecosystem essential to discover and translate breakthrough biomedical research to therapies research into meaningful patient therapies . Our goal is to transform the research IT experience to accellerate scientific innovation.

The Director, Translational Medicine IT is accountable for IT and informatics capabilities to drive our company's translational medicine efforts. The successful candidate will be a member of the translational medicine leadership team and partner to define and realize the strategic goals of the organization, partnering with engineering, data science and scientific support functions to implement and operationalize necessary programs. In addition, the successful candidate will be the lead for the South San Francisco discovery site, partnering with leadership and scientists across the site to ensure that functional and enterprise IT capabilities are appropriately engaged to empower the site and to identify and address site-based opportunities and needs.

Key Responsibilities

  • As a member of the Translational Medicine (TM) leadership team, contribute to the strategic and tactical planning and execution oversight of business objectives, bringing the perspective of technology and information sciences.

  • As a member of the South San Francisco site leadership team, understand site-based issues and opportunities relevant to IT, informatics and data science and partner across the organization to successfully resolve.

  • Build and manage an investment roadmap and IT program portfolio designed to drive business outcomes, working to establish a culture of joint accountability for business outcomes across research and IT colleagues

  • Partner with Research IT architecture and other research functional area IT leads to drive the creation and use of enterprise assets to provide value for the translational medicine area and S. San Francisco and to align

  • Partner with scientific support functions to ensure that business experimental and analytical workflows are enabled, working to establish meaningful metrics for outcomes.

  • Foster the identification and exploration of opportunities to use computational and data science capabilities to gain new scientific insights and/or efficiencies.

  • Serve as the primary point of contact in Translational Medicine and for the South San Francisco discovery site for all IT initiatives to understand implications for the TM area and/or site, driving awareness and/or mitigation activities as needed

Manage and develop a team of 3-6 direct reports, as well as coaching and developing colleagues across Global Research IT and collaborating functions to help build a rich talent pool of IT and informatics colleagues to drive the scientific mission of research.

Education Minimum Requirement:

  • Master's degree in an Information Science or Quantitative Life Science Field or other related field; PhD strongly preferred

Required Experience and Skills:

  • A minimum of 7 yrs. experience in Healthcare or Life Sciences IT or Informatics, preferably in Translational Medicine or Research.

  • Leadership experience and demonstrated leadership experience with complex programs and teams

  • Deep understanding of pharmaceutical discovery and translational workflows and the information types and technology systems that enable them.

  • Demonstrated ability to partner with business stakeholders and navigate across conflicting priorities to balance critical tactical and strategic needs.

  • Highly responsive and detail-oriented, with a focus on user experience and accountability for outcomes.

  • Strong relationship building abilities and partnership skills; Ability to work effectively through influence across all levels of the organization, achieving results with a largely virtual and distributed team

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to quickly synthesize data and develop recommendations for senior leader.

  • Proven ability as a self-starter and problem solver; comfort with ambiguity and able to effectively take the conceptual to the pragmatic, addressing business and technical obstacles as they emerge

  • Sound judgment, planning, forecasting and project management skills

  • Solid track record of recruiting, coaching and developing talent
