The Associate Director of Research Systems Architect will have ownership of technical architecture across Discovery Pre-Clinical and Early Development Technology engineering portfolio: the architecture and development of a next generation research science platform; data ingest, utility and annotation mechanisms that provide rich scientific data to that platform and other core research systems; development of leading edge data governance, provenance and integrity mechanisms. The role requires a mix of small scale innovation, identification of industry trends and emergent software components and co-development with established software vendors in the pharmaceutical research space, leading a team of engineers building data utility and governance services. The role requires strategic, architectural and implementation understanding for machine learning, automation and instrumentation that will accelerate results. Collaboration across Merck’s IT hubs, with industry consortia and with business subject matter experts will determine how quickly solutions are developed and scaled in deployment.

Education Minimum Requirement:

  • Bachelors in Computer Science or related Engineering field.

Required Experience and Skills:

  • At least 3 years working with data sciences and familiarity with nuances of life sciences data variety, volume, and velocity

  • Deep technology experience and a track record of success with architectural design, delivery of big data analytics, information management, workflow and automation or, machine learning capabilities

  • Practical engineering experience with maturing a complex application landscape via use of modern architectures, standards based APIs and microservices, including DevOps practices.

  • Drive a culture of collaboration across functional areas and IT teams

  • Work with client services and delivery leads to evaluate solution delivery alternatives, review solutions delivery plans from an architecture perspective, and provide appropriate recommendations and ongoing guidance

Preferred Experience and Skills:

  • Knowledge of big data ecosystems, graph databases, machine learning frameworks, and theoretical computer science underpinning them.

  • Experience with variety of governance mechanisms, ranging from XACML to Apache Ranger

  • Excellent communication skills, comfort with industry group presentations, passion for identifying new technologies and triaging its impact and utility.

  • Experience working in a globally distributed, highly functional team, with an appropriate attention to detail.
