The Computational Platforms IT department is responsible for the development, delivery and support of scientific computing solutions used by our organization's drug discovery and development scientists. We combine scientific domain knowledge, software engineering and high performance computing expertise to provide the optimal solution to meet the specific needs of our researchers.

As a Senior Engineer in an Operations role of High Performance Computing your primary role is that of “Senior Linux Systems Administrator and Scientific Workstation Specialist”. You will be using your scripting, architectural, systems engineering, Linux system administration, troubleshooting and communication skills to deliver and support research and statistical applications used to make key decisions in our organization's business. The Senior Engineer is a crucial role in the High Performance Computing team that requires a deep understanding of the technology stack, an understanding of the scientific domain, and the ability to work directly with scientists to understand their problems, devise and communicate solutions. Qualified individuals will thrive on solving challenges that are impacting production applications and working with team members across the organization to deliver quality automated solutions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Understand user requirements and architect solutions

  • Provide third-level product support of scientific applications primarily in the Linux environment, including Java, R, Python and Perl-based academic, internal, as well as commercial codes

  • Install and configure software and related server or high-end scientific workstation infrastructures

  • Deploy software/code/tools, upgrades, patch deployment, & OS upgrades in either in-house infrastructure or AWS

  • Coordinate with the Development team and Q/A team for the deployment

  • Maintain the environment (test data, test accounts)

  • Technical research with regard to the infrastructure and maintenance of lab or research-production environment activities

  • Responsible to test and write work instructions (WI) for both end-users and tier2 Operations

  • Interact with the Operations teams to coordinate for any set-up needs

  • Be responsible for change and version controls

  • Attend architecture/design phase meetings on projects and provide input

  • Availability for evening and/or weekend work when necessary

  • Build prototypes, products and systems suitable for user acceptance testing (UAT)

  • Design testing procedures and coordinate with others to perform tests

  • Comply with applicable company policies and procedures.

Education Minimum Requirement:

  • Preferred but not required, Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, or a scientific, or engineering discipline

Required Experience and Skills:

  • A minimum of 5 years experience directly related to operation and customer support in large Linux based computing platforms

  • Advanced skills in Linux OS platform administration with fluency in at least 1 scripting language such as Bash

  • A minimum of 3 years experience with using automated build and deployment technologies such as Cobbler, Ansible & Foreman

  • Demonstrated skills in ssh ( including ssh and remote access scripting and ssh-agent) and KDE Plasma Desktop

  • Good knowledge of Windows, monitoring technologies (HP Oneview, xymon or similar), storage, networking, backup, archive and disaster recovery solutions

  • Troubleshooting skills in the enterprise environment

  • Demonstrated ability to clearly communicate technical and non-technical information verbally and in writing

Preferred Experience and Skills:

  • Experience with RHEL 6/7, CentOS 6/7, & 3D Monitors

  • Experience with PBS Pro, Univa/Grid Engine or other DRM's

  • Experience with HPE, Cray and Isilon

  • Experience with nVidia GPU drivers, NVidia 3D Vision Stereoscopic hardware with IR, & configuration tools

  • Experience with project management technologies such as Confluence and Jira

  • Knowledge of the drug discovery process

  • Knowledge of computational chemistry applications such as Schrodinger, MOE, etc.
