Merck Executive Director, Scientific Medical and Patient Perspective - Infectious Disease/HIV in Rahway, New Jersey

The Global Director, Scientific Medical and Patient Perspective (GDSMPP) for Infectious Diseases (with focus on HIV) will be responsible for leading and enabling the planning and execution of patient engagement activities to assure that patients’ perspectives remain central to all our Infectious Diseases and HIV work. He/she will collaborate with partners inside and outside of Merck to solicit and include the voices of the patients in research, medical affairs, commercial, public policy and manufacturing plans. He/she will work with the PCPH regional teams to coordinate and cascade expertise.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Increasing Patient Innovation (PI) and engagement across Merck/MSD for Infectious Diseases with focus on HIV

  • Bringing the voice of the patient into internal decision-making,

  • Executing those strategic initiatives that may flow from evolving patient innovation/engagement priorities, and internal and external influences

  • Supporting efforts to solicit and include patients’ insights and perspectives throughout the product lifecycle and patient care journey.

  • He/she will be responsible for adapting the strategic intent to the available opportunities within the Infectious Diseases therapeutic area consistent with all legal and compliance requirements

  • He/she will navigate across a complex set of internal and external stakeholders and customers ranging from individual patients to powerful patient and medical organizations.

  • Working with key stakeholders to develop and execute the global Infectious Diseases patient engagement plan

  • Representing Merck scientifically and medically in a variety of settings including with institutions, professional organizations and patient organizations

  • Obtaining input from global scientific and medical leaders as determined by the needs of the Chief Patient Officer

  • Ensuring alignment with regional and country level related activities (patient, scientific and medical)

  • Developing innovative approaches to working with academia and patient organizations to advance scientific innovation and maximize population health

  • Providing external input (scientific and medical) to the Chief Patient Officer and Patient Innovation Organization through ongoing candid conversation

  • Providing and facilitating input from patients, patient organizations, and other sources of patient information

Education Requirement:

  • Advanced degree in health sciences, public health, public policy, epidemiology or other relevant degree required

  • MD or PhD preferred


  • Deep clinical and research expertise in the field of Infectious Diseases and HIV.

  • The ideal candidate will have deep academic understanding of the science of patient input and a strong record of achievement obtaining and incorporating patient insights into decision making.

  • Behavioral Science/Education/Decision Making expertise and experience.

  • Deep understanding of Patient Engagement, Patient Insights, Patient Advocacy Groups and Organizations as well as knowledge of best practices in those areas.

  • Ability to navigate a complex matrixed organization, think creatively, and develop innovative strategies and solutions.

  • Ability to understand and manage a diverse set of issues and engage with a diverse and sometimes hostile group of stakeholders.

  • Ability to manage numerous, competing priorities under pressure and effective collaborative working and program management skills.

  • High degree of ethics and ability to build effective working relationships both internally and externally.

  • Excellent communicator, both in written communications and oral presentations.

  • Positive energy and enthusiasm that inspires others to excel.

  • Scientific and medical credibility to represent the company to patients, patient advocates and patient organizations.

  • Scientific and medical credibility to represent the company to professional medical and scientific organizations.

  • Ability to work well as a team member and to manage through influence

  • Willingness to travel (approximately 20-25% anticipated)


  • U.S./Global experience in anti-infective clinical research, regulatory affairs, scientific and medical affairs, and pharmaceutical policy.

  • An understanding of the importance of patient innovation and engagement across Merck/MSD.

  • Demonstrated track record of establishing trusted and meaningful relationships with patient groups and organizations strongly preferred

  • Demonstrated track record of establishing trusted and meaningful relationships with professional society or public health organizations and their leaders

  • MD clinical experience (15 years, post degree); publications in relevant therapeutic area with international recognition desirable
