Merck Assoc. Director Engineering/Compliance in Rahway, New Jersey

Reporting to the Exec Director, the Associate Director position will be providing compliance leadership as Quality/GxP Subject Matter Expert (SME) for NA Research Facilities Management/ IFM organizations. This new position will partner with internal EHS and Quality teams, internal GWES teams, external service providers Integrated Facilities Management (IFM), and internal bargaining unit operations.

Key activities for the position include:

  • Program management for all current and future compliance initiatives.

  • Environmental, Health & Safety Subject Matter Expert (SME) for NA Research Facilities Management and IFM organizations.

  • Quality Subject Matter Expert (SME) for NA Research Facilities Management IFM organizations.

  • Mentoring and partnering with Site operations, Global Facilities Management (GFM), and IFM organizations.

  • Understanding and oversight of the organization’s compliance calendar (inspection and agency requirements). Ensures Merck Direct and IFM have established a robust process in place to be consistently inspection and compliance ready.

  • Facility Management leader for all incident investigations in the region.

  • Partner with Global Safety & Environment (GSE), Merck Research Labs (MRL), and Global Engineering Services (GES), organizations to improve the EHS performance for the NA Research Facilities.

  • Partner with Global Quality in insuring Quality standards and protocols are achieved for RY Warehouse and other GMP areas.

  • Collaborate with other Global Workplace & Enterprise Services (GWES) / GFM, EHS leaders for North America/Latin America, and Europe/Asia in the development and implementation of GWES compliance programs.

  • Provide SME expertise for internal and external EHS and Quality audits

E ducation Minimum Requirement:

  • Bachelor's degree required in one of the following areas: Engineering, Safety, or applicable science discipline.

  • Preferred: safety accreditations and certification from a recognized body.

Required Experience and Skills:

  • Compliance & ethics. Prior experience with engineering design, equipment operation, vendor interface, risk assessment, regulations, contractor safety, and guidance development is essential.

  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills with strong influencing and negotiation skills. Client relationship management/networking and business partnering skills.

  • Communication skills - Influencing, mentorship, and advocacy.

  • Experience in managing maintenance, utility, or production operations desirable.

  • Experience of applying Lean Six Sigma (LSS) tools and techniques to drive efficiency and resolve problems desirable. Critical thinking and root cause analysis and Corrective Action/Preventive Action (CAPA).

  • Experience of coordinating programs across operating units and business analytics and reporting.

  • A minimum of ten (10) years demonstrated qualification experience.

  • Experience of working in a matrix organization and managing direct and dotted-line reports.

  • High degree of integrity and personal ethics required representing Merck externally.

  • Resilient and focused, able to manage competing priorities.

  • Effective team player with collaborative focus.

  • Fluent in English.

  • A Strategic thinker and self-starter with demonstrated history of leading change and Facilities Management strategic site planning.

Preferred Experience and Skills:

  • Experience in dealing with agencies and management of professionals outside of Merck.

  • Experience working with and managing unionized work force.

  • Experience working within an Integrated Facilities Management model.

  • Knowledge and experience in management of Merck projects and facilities. Understanding of, and experience with, Capital and profit planning processes.

  • Ability to quickly address issues and develop solutions to minimize compliance risk, improves efficiencies, and ultimately optimizes business resources.

  • Strong leadership and analytical competencies with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to quickly adapt to changes in workload and effectively manage resource pool and competing business priorities.

  • Experience with and knowledge of Merck Safety Standards and Procedures
